Small Business Tip Series

Ideas, Insights and Tips for Small Catholic Business Owners

Why a business tip series for a "Catholic" site?

Citing a specific passage from Scripture, the reader can see and learn the context of this small business tip series. The passage is taken from Acts 4:32-35

The whole group of believers was united, heart and soul; no one claimed for his own use anything that he had, as everything they owned was held in common. The apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus with great power, and they were all given great respect. None of their members was ever in want, as all those who owned land or houses would sell them, and bring the money from them, to present it to the apostles; it was then distributed to any members who might be in need.

The idea and insight for a small business tip series was taken within the scriptural context of sharing that is found in this passage on the book of the Acts of the Apostles. Many do not realize it, but the idea and insight of receiving more when we give more, is really a reality that also exists in the world of business. Oftentimes, the more we give of ourselves - our time, our energies, our resources, and our very selves to a cause, a project, a venture, an enterprise, or to a vision as universal as the one of the Catholic church, we will indeed receive God's blessings. And we will be surprised at how much we receive from people whom in the first place we did not expect would give and help.

In business, people generally think that you go into business just for the money. Not all business people do this. Some are just as enraptured by an all-consuming vision similar to the one that fired up St. Ignatius of Loyola's heart and soul to start the Society of Jesus. Vision, idea and insight are what is really at the heart and soul of a business enterprise. Money and income are only by-products. And they are a reward that comes from honest-to-goodness old-fashioned hard work.

So the idea and insight of generosity and selfless service is the context in which this small business tip Series will speak about. Receiving more when we give more, is a truth based on the Pentecost spirit that inspired the apostolic community to ease the financial woes of their needy brethren. The miracle of Pentecost is a miracle of community - of being one in mind and spirit, in prayer, and in genuine concern for one another. If this spirit of sharing and of giving is translated into a Catholic family business system, then that business system only needs to pursue business policies that would be people-oriented, family-oriented, community-oriented and especially client-centered. It would naturally tend towards being more service-oriented and more focused on the ideals of social justice - taking into consideration the situation of employees and all the little people who are part of the business network.

All this can be summed up in the concept of social responsibility. When we give a spirit of excellence to our services, or share our extra resources with those in the business system, the more the business prospers. If we focus more on 'sharing' the business, rather than 'owning' the business, then we have rightly followed the spirit of community that the early Christians practiced - a spirit of sharing and unity.
